A judge presides over a session at a specialized court designated for the adjudication of Cipher Cases filed under the Official Secrets Act.
ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain ordered the remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi to Adiala Jail for a 14-day judicial period in the cipher case.
The proceedings took place at a dedicated court established to handle cases brought under the Official Secrets Act. The court directed that the accused be presented again on September 13, 2023.
Amid heightened security, the PTI vice-chairman appeared before the court. Prosecutor Zulfiqar Naqvi requested the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) be granted additional physical remand of the PTI leader. However, the court denied the request, opting instead to remand Qureshi to Adiala Jail for a 14-day judicial period.
The case revolves around the alleged “misuse” of diplomatic cipher content, which former Prime Minister Imran Khan cited as evidence of a plot to oust his government.
Both Imran and PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi face charges under sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, of 1923.
As per the FIR filed on August 15, following inquiry No 111/2023 based on a complaint registered with the Counter Terrorism Wing (CTW) of the FIA, it emerged that the former prime minister, the former foreign minister, and their associates were implicated in conveying information contained within a classified document (cipher telegram from Parep Washington dated March 7, 2022, addressed to the secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to unauthorized individuals (i.e., the general public). This was allegedly done by distorting facts to further their “ulterior motives” and personal gains, thus detrimentally impacting state security interests.
