How to clean your makeup brushes

What’s the importance of cleaning your makeup brushes? There are three significant motives behind this practice

  • Enhanced Performance: Regular cleaning of your makeup brushes ensures better application and smoother blending of your cosmetics.
  • Bacteria and Oil Prevention: Cleaning your brushes helps prevent the accumulation of bacteria and oil, reducing the risk of skin breakouts and infections. It also prevents the transfer of unwanted substances onto your skin.
  • Extended Lifespan: Proper maintenance through cleaning can significantly prolong the life of your makeup brushes. Given that brushes are a substantial investment, taking steps to safeguard their durability is essential.

In light of these advantages, it’s imperative that we prioritize the cleaning of our makeup brushes.

Ideally, we should aim to cleanse our brushes on a weekly basis. However, it’s safe to assume that many of us struggle to maintain this frequency. A practical objective is to give your brushes a thorough cleaning at least once a month. Here’s a breakdown of the process to effectively clean your makeup brushes.

To effectively clean your makeup brushes, follow these steps:

  • Saturate with Warm Water: Gently saturate the brush hairs with warm water, ensuring not to over-soak the brush, which can cause damage.
  • Apply Shampoo: Dispense a pea-sized amount of mild shampoo into your palm, and massage the cleanser into the brush hair. Continue massaging until the shampoo is evenly distributed.
  • Thoroughly Rinse: Rinse the brush under running water until the water runs clear, ensuring all the cleanser is removed.
  • Repeat if Needed: If necessary, repeat the shampooing and rinsing process until the brush is thoroughly clean.
  • Remove Excess Water: Hold the brush between your index finger and thumb, creating a ring shape, and gently pull the brush through your fingers. Apply slight pressure to remove excess water and maintain the brush’s shape.
  • Dry Flat: Lay the cleaned brush flat on a towel to dry. Avoid drying the brush in an upright position, as this can weaken the adhesive holding the bristles and lead to hair loss.

By following these steps, you can ensure your makeup brushes are clean and well-maintained, contributing to their longevity and optimal performance.

Avoid placing your brushes in a sterilizer, as this can result in irreversible damage. For added care, Jane Iredale offers a Botanical Brush Cleaner designed to safeguard and sanitize your brushes. To swiftly eliminate makeup residue from your brushes, spritz a tissue with the Botanical Brush Cleaner. Then, gently cleanse your brushes using a back-and-forth motion until all excess makeup is removed.
