Nancy Drew’s producer disclosed that CW only communicated the cancellation after they themselves reached out to the network during the midway point of Season 4.
Larry Teng, the executive producer of Nancy Drew, is not holding back in his criticism of CW for the sudden cancellation of the show.
On X, formerly Twitter, earlier this week, Teng openly expressed his frustration towards the network’s higher-ups for deciding to cancel the show despite its well-received reception.
“Based on what I’ve seen, the response to the series finale has been largely positive. Now picture yourself watching that finale, only to realize we didn’t know it was going to be the final episode of #NancyDrew ever. That scenario was almost our reality,” he shared on social media.
Teng further disclosed that the president of the “new CW” informed the show’s team about their intentions to terminate the series after Season 4, just before they were set to shoot the planned season finale.
“It was at that moment,” he recounted, “when he casually mentioned to us, ‘Oh, we’re not renewing you. The production costs are too high.’ If our Studio hadn’t made that call, who knows if we would’ve ever found out,” the industry figure detailed.
“I’m incredibly thankful the Studio took the initiative. You all deserved the most fitting conclusion possible. That’s why I commend the writers for rallying to craft an ending. It was truly remarkable,” he added.
Teng also acknowledged that the series had to settle for a somewhat rushed conclusion, as they weren’t afforded sufficient time to conceive a more polished ending.
“Since November, I’ve been infuriated with the decision-makers at this new CW. Their actions are disappointing. They are well within their rights to prioritize profits… even if that means canceling shows,” the writer expressed with frustration.
Ultimately, the producer extended his appreciation to the show’s devoted fan base for embracing the finale despite its limitations.
Having made its debut in October 2019, Nancy Drew revolved around the titular character portrayed by Kennedy McMann, portraying her as a teenage detective.
