Iran announces the successful prevention of a plot aimed at orchestrating 30 simultaneous terrorist explosions in densely populated areas of Tehran, with the intent of destabilizing security.
Iranian authorities have apprehended 28 individuals with links to the Islamic State group for planning to target Tehran during the anniversary of last year’s protests, according to a statement from the intelligence ministry on Sunday.
The protests erupted following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, while in custody on September 16, 2022, on charges of violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women.
The ministry’s website revealed that “several terrorist bases and safe houses were targeted during a series of coordinated operations in Tehran, Alborz, and West Azerbaijan provinces, resulting in the arrest of 28 members of this terrorist network.”
“These individuals are affiliated with the professional criminal network of Daesh (Islamic State group), and some of them have a history of supporting takfiris in Syria or engaging in activities in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Kurdistan region of Iraq,” the statement continued.
The ministry stated that it had thwarted a plot to “execute 30 simultaneous terrorist explosions in densely populated areas of Tehran with the aim of destabilizing security and provoking unrest and protests on the anniversary of last year’s riots.”
The months-long protests led to numerous casualties, including the deaths of hundreds of people, including dozens of security personnel. Tehran attributed the unrest to “riots” instigated by foreign governments and “hostile media.”
In a separate development, on Thursday, a Tajik IS member was sentenced to death for his involvement in a deadly shooting at a Shiite Muslim shrine in August. The attack occurred at the Shah Cheragh mausoleum in Shiraz, the capital of Fars province in the south, less than a year after a mass shooting at the same location, which was later claimed by the IS group.
