In Islamabad, the PMLN has instructed its members and leaders to maintain discipline as party leader Nawaz Sharif appears before the Islamabad High Court and Accountability Court today to seek relief in cases where he was previously sentenced.
Reliable sources disclosed on Monday evening that Nawaz, who arrived in Islamabad earlier in the day, departed for Murree. After an overnight stay, he will travel to Islamabad by road. Maryam Nawaz, Pervez Rashid, and Ishaq Dar are accompanying him in Murree, and they will all accompany him to Islamabad. Former Prime Minister and PMLN President Shehbaz Sharif will join his brother in the court appearance and fly in from Lahore on a special plane. A few other prominent figures will also accompany him during the journey to Islamabad. Nawaz, who has recently become more involved in political activities, may separately visit Maulana Fazlur Rehman and former Federal Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry today (Tuesday). The Maulana’s mother-in-law passed away earlier this month, and Fazal’s son tragically died in a road accident in July. Shehbaz and Maryam have already visited to offer condolences. It is suggested that the entire PMLN leadership may visit Fazal at his residence in Chak Shehzad to express their condolences today.
The Islamabad administration has taken extensive security measures to facilitate Nawaz’s movement within the federal capital. Islamabad Inspector General of Police, Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, chaired a meeting to formulate a strategy to handle any unforeseen circumstances. He remains optimistic that the situation will remain peaceful, as the PMLN leadership has already instructed their supporters to maintain peace.
The legal team of the PMLN leader submitted applications with the Islamabad High Court on Monday, seeking the reinstatement of appeals in the Avenfield Property and Al-Azizia Steel Mills cases. Advocate Amjad Pervaiz filed these applications and requested the court to decide on the appeals after hearing arguments on their merits.
In the petitions, Nawaz Sharif stated that he had not fully recovered from his illness and decided to return to Pakistan due to the country’s dire economic situation. He pointed out that he was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment by the accountability court in his absence on July 6, 2018. Despite his wife being on a ventilator in a London hospital, his request to delay the judgment was rejected by the trial court. Nonetheless, he returned to Pakistan, served his jail sentence, and filed appeals against his convictions. He also mentioned that co-accused individuals, including Maryam Nawaz and her husband, had already been acquitted in the Avenfield property case. The application highlighted that the appeals were terminated in his absence, and due to his health issues, he couldn’t appear before the court, despite consistently submitting medical reports to the Lahore High Court (LHC).
