In the ongoing debate over football’s greatest player, former English midfielder Steven Gerrard has voiced his support for Cristiano Ronaldo, dubbing the Portuguese star “The GOAT.”
Gerrard credited Ronaldo with inspiring his decision to join the Saudi football league and commended the former Manchester United player for significantly elevating the sport’s popularity in the region.
Referring to Ronaldo as ‘The GOAT,’ Gerrard remarked, “The arrival of Ronaldo in January was a huge signing. He still had a lot of football to offer. From that moment, the league worldwide became a popular talking point, attracting big-name signings and talents after his arrival.”
During Ronaldo’s tenure with Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, where he signed a deal worth over €200 million in December of the previous year, Gerrard, who became the manager of Al Ettifaq in July, closely followed the developments.
Explaining his interest in joining Saudi football, Gerrard said, “The Ettifaq proposal and opportunity were the most exciting for me because I’ve signed up to a club where the board is very passionate. They understand the challenges and recognize that building the club will take time.”
Regarding the project, Gerrard emphasized the need for patience, stating, “It’s not an easy fix; it’s not something you fix in a week, a month, or six months. It’s a project to build on the pitch, but also a lot of things needed to change around it to give the first team the support it needs.”
