The right-handed batsman relinquished the role of captain for the Pakistan team on November 15, citing the team’s disappointing performance in the World Cup.
Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden has expressed disappointment and concern over Babar Azam’s resignation as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team. This decision followed the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup semifinals.
Hayden, in an interview with ESPNCricinfo, pointed out “structural issues” within Pakistan’s cricket setup, emphasizing that these problems extend beyond individual players to the broader sports culture and framework in the country. He lamented Babar’s removal as captain, suggesting that officials may have overlooked his contributions both as a player and leader.
According to Hayden, Babar’s performance statistics as captain were impressive, with a higher average compared to his non-captaincy performances. He expressed disappointment and surprise at the decision, noting Babar’s youth, dominance in world cricket, and potential as a leader. Hayden suggested that the decision to replace Babar’s leadership might have been premature.
Hayden also highlighted the reasons behind Pakistan’s subpar performance in the World Cup 2023, citing the absence of players like Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi not being at his best, and failures from Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Fakhar Zaman arriving too late.
Babar stepped down as captain in all three formats, and on the same day, the board appointed Shan Masood as the Test captain, with Shaheen Shah Afridi named as the T20I captain. Shan’s captaincy tenure will extend until the end of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25, starting with the three-match Test series against Australia. Shaheen will lead the team in the T20I format, starting with the five-match T20I series in New Zealand from January 12 to January 21.
