Lionel Messi christens Royal Caribbean's cruise ship as 'Icon of Seas' alongside his Inter Miami team
Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami team secures Royal Caribbean as its new jersey sponsor.
Lionel Messi has bestowed the name “Icon of the Seas” upon Royal Caribbean’s newest and largest cruise ship, as he and his Inter Miami teammates proudly showcased the team’s new away uniform sponsor.
The naming ceremony took place on Tuesday at the Port of Miami, hosted by the world’s second-largest cruise line operator. The ship, measuring a record-breaking 1,198 feet, will embark on its maiden voyage this weekend with a $2 billion price tag. Featuring 20 decks, a combined weight of 250,800 gross tonnes, and a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers, it stands as the longest liner globally.
As the focal point of the event, Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, and World Cup champion initiated the tradition of breaking a champagne bottle against the ship’s bow—a symbolic gesture believed to bring luck to the ship and its occupants.
Describing the experience as a “privilege,” the 36-year-old Argentinean expressed gratitude and named the ship “Icon of the Seas” during the ceremony. In Spanish, Messi stated, “It’s a great honor for me, and I know what it means for the city of Miami and the entire world. So, I name this ship Icon of the Seas. God bless you and all of the people who will sail with her.”
Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley remarked, “We built the biggest, baddest ship on the planet. It’s really exciting when you introduce a new class of ship, but it’s even more exciting when it seems to be really spot on.”
